Chapter 15

Eryon

I sat between Xevius and Venya on the right side of the stage of the auditorium, like the accused we were. In the center of the stage, Aleina, Lavenia, and Zenavia occupied their seats as the Veredian Council. Kamala had declined the honorary seat that had been offered to her as she had chaired the first reunion concerning our disgrace. Instead, she had chosen to sit in the front row of the 20,000 people auditorium, next to Khel, Lhor, Amalia, and Ghan. All five of them bore a grim expression that had my stomach twisting into knots.

I had spoken once with Amalia. Naturally, she had felt hurt and betrayed that I hadn’t revealed the truth to her after all this time. My daughter always had a huge heart. I believed she had already forgiven me, but she was torn by the anger her mates—especially Khel—and her children still felt about this whole mess.

Next to them, Valena and her mate Zhul, Maheva and her own spouse Dr. Minh had a worried expression on their faces. Minh, always so calm, stoic, and classy, had torn me a new one in the foulest of diatribes. My ears still rang from it. Then, he had told me never to lie to them again, and that had been the end of it. Valena had harsh words with her father, Thaddeus. He had been heartbroken over it. But in the week since that revelation, they had spoken again with cooler heads and made some progress.

My gaze roamed over the countless rows of the auditorium, filled to the brim, both on the floor and on the two rows of balcony. The Titans had filled the first balcony. Amalia’s children occupied the center seats in the balcony’s front row. Valena’s children sat on their left, and Aleina’s children on their right. Like pariahs, my Korlethean brothers and sisters sat at the very back of the room on the ground floor.

In this instant, I would have given anything to possess Valena’s mind-reading ability. Looking at the audience’s aura didn’t help either. Their emotions were too conflicted to really tell me anything. At least, conflict beat flat out fury. It meant we still had a chance.

A set of five giant screens behind the stage suddenly lit up. The one directly behind the Council showed an enlarged view of the stage, with the Council in the middle and us three Korletheans at the side. The other four screens, two on each side of the stage, showed other residents of Veredia who couldn’t fit inside the auditorium or were located in other regions of the planet, away from the capital, Haven. It marked the signal of the start of the proceedings.

I swallowed hard and exchanged a nervous glance with my companions as Aleina rose to address her people.

“People of Veredia,” Aleina said in a solemn voice, “we have gathered to discuss the troubling facts that have recently been revealed to us. You have all seen the recordings of the accusations stated by the Sarenian named Faolen Velkis.
